Jose Mourinho has lifted the lid on how Kevin De Bruyne's £18million sale from Chelsea to Wolfsburg seven years ago panned out, stating that it was not his decision to let him go.

The Belgium star only made nine appearances for the Blues and enjoyed a loan spell at German side Werder Bremen in two years at Stamford Bridge.

In 2014 the midfielder was sold for £18m to Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg, before he then moved to Manchester City in a £52m deal a year later.

Mourinho faced much of the flak for letting a superstar leave, but has now told talkSPORT it wasn't his decision to make.

The 29-year-old has gone on to be one of the best players in the world and won the Premier League's PFA Player of the Year for the second successive year earlier this month.

Mourinho added that De Bruyne was not prepared to bide his time and wait for his opportunity to make an impact at Stamford Bridge.

As well as personal accolades, De Bruyne has won three Premier League titles, five League Cups and the FA Cup in six years at the Etihad.

The group stage is over and it's time for the main event as the knockout rounds of the 2022 FIFA World Cup begin. There's no time for easing yourself into the games that matter as they start of with a bang as the United States square off against the Netherlands in one of the most intriguing matches of the round, followed by Argentina taking on one of the surprise teams of the tournament in Australia.

For the U.S., Saturday's match offers the possibility of matching their best performance at a men's World Cup in the modern era.  The 2002 run to the quarterfinals is the deepest run since the very first World Cup in 1930 where two group stage wins put them in the semifinals. This is a Netherlands team that wasn't really challenged by their competition, which included Ecuador, Senegal and hosts Qatar in Group A. The U.S., on the other hand, were pushed by one of the tournament favorites in England, who they held to a 0-0 draw. In between that, they drew 1-1 with Wales in the opener and beat Iran 1-0 to secure advancement.

The United States kept their No.1 spot at the top of the latest women's FIFA rankings published on Friday, while newly crowned European champions England rose to fourth place.
The rankings come after a busy month for women's football in which continental championships for Africa, North America, South America and Oceania took place alongside the European Championship as part of qualifying for the 2023 Women's World Cup.
The U.S. won their ninth CONCACAF W Championship title in July to remain in first place, a spot they have occupied since 2017.
England's Euros win on home soil pushed them up four spots from eighth, while runners-up Germany leapfrogged losing semifinalists Sweden into second.
England and the U.S. are set to face each other in a clash between the European and world champions at Wembley on Oct. 7.
South Africa moved up to 54th off the back of their first Africa Cup of Nations title, while Zambia, who reached the tournament's semifinals, were the most improved side in the rankings, rising 23 places to 80th.

Alfie May rescued a last-minute point as 10-man Cheltenham clinched a 2-2 draw at Cambridge on the closing day of the League One season.
The U's took the lead through Sam Smith's 20th goal of the season, a fine low finish from the edge of the area, but the visitors were level straight from kick-off.
May latched onto a deflected shot before rounding Will Mannion and netting for the 25th time in the campaign.
Five minutes after half-time the hosts went back ahead, with Jack Iredale's angled delivery into the box smashed home brilliantly on the volley by Smith.
Shilow Tracey should have extended the lead soon after but was denied by Scott Flinders, who also made a good stop from Liam Bennett's blast.
They still found time to equalise in the first minute of added time, May pouncing on a Jubril Okedina error to fire home and leave the visitors 15th as Cambridge ended the campaign a place higher.
Goal!  Cambridge United 2, Cheltenham Town 2. Alfie May right footed shot from the left side of the box to the bottom right corner.

Rakish Bingham struck the second-half winner to send Ebbsfleet into the second round of the FA Cup for the first time in 10 years with a 2-1 victory over 10-man FC Halifax.
Bingham decided it after the sides had gone in level at the break, with Jamie Cooke cancelling out Toby Edser's opener for Ebbsfleet.
It might have been a different story had Jack Senior not been sent off after 56 minutes, but that helped swing the momentum of the tie firmly in Ebbsfleet's favour.
The hosts went ahead when the excellent Edser's cross from the left drifted through the six-yard box and could not be cleared at the back post by Senior.
Cooke then sprinkled some FA Cup magic on the contest when he let fly from 25 yards and his shot swerved into the net, leaving Mark Cousins motionless.
Town again fell behind when Bingham converted a corner at the near post, and things went from bad to worse when Senior was sent off for a second booking when he tripped Omari Sterling-Jones, who had a shot tipped behind by Sam Johnson before Bingham's goal.
