North Korea and South Korea Exchange Artillery Fire on the Maritime Border

Like a vicious circle, the military exercises between the two Koreas create endless tension on the Korean Peninsula. Neighboring countries are also worried.

The atmosphere on the Korean Peninsula has heated up again after reciprocal training with missiles with real bullets between North Korea and South Korea. Korea's second neighbor, China, asked all parties to exercise restraint to avoid an escalation of the conflict.

This statement was conveyed by Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin in Beijing, China, Friday (5/1/2024). "China, as a close neighbor of South Korea and North Korea, continues to monitor developments in the situation on the Korean Peninsula. We ask that each party refrain from taking actions that could allow tensions to escalate. "Please prioritize a peaceful approach based on dialogue," he said.

Reporting from The Korea Times newspaper, North Korea (North Korea) opened artillery fire at 09.00-11.00. A total of 200 bullets were fired from Tanjung Jangsan and Tanjung Deungsan which are located in southwest North Korea. The bullets fell in the sea, just south of the maritime boundary between North and South Korea.

"This North Korean action is purely a provocation aimed at destabilizing the Korean Peninsula," said South Korean Armed Forces Spokesman Lee Sung-joon. He said South Korea would take appropriate action.

The North Korean artillery shells entered the waters of South Korea's Yeonpyeong Island. This island is located 120 kilometers from the west coast of South Korea. From the mainland to Yeonpyeong Island it takes 2.5 hours by ferry. The population of this island is 2,000 people, including civilians and South Korean soldiers.

The South Korean news agency, Yonhap, reported that at 15.00, the South Korean Navy held artillery shooting exercises with real shells on Yeonpyeong Island which is close to the North Korean border. Civilians were asked to temporarily take shelter in bomb bunkers provided by the government.

The North Korean military then stated that the shooting drills were a "natural countermeasure" to the South Korean war games earlier this week. "If the enemy carries out actions that could be considered provocation under the pretext of countermeasures, the Korean People's Armed Forces (KPA) will demonstrate harsh retaliation that has never been done before," said the statement from the KPA Chief of Staff.

Yeonpyeong Island and the surrounding waters are a disputed maritime border area between South Korea and North Korea. It was recorded that open conflict occurred between the navies of the two countries in these waters in 1999, 2002 and 2009. In 2010, a South Korean Navy ship sank due to a torpedo and 46 of its crew died. There is no evidence of the perpetrator, but suspicion falls on North Korea.

On September 19, 2018, the militaries of the two Koreas signed an agreement. In fact, since the 1950 Korean War, South Korea and North Korea have not had a peace agreement. Their relationship status is a truce. On land, the border between the two countries is at Panmunjom, which is known as the demilitarized zone.

Along the land border there are 11 control posts. In the 2018 agreement, it was stated that the two Koreas agreed to dismantle 10 of the 11 command posts and withdraw their troops and weapons. South Korea and North Korea agreed not to hold military exercises and air surveillance in support zones.

However, things changed in November 2023. At that time, North Korea successfully launched its first spy satellite. Angry South Korea reintroduces air surveillance in protest against Pyongyang. North Korea responded to Seoul's protests by saying it would deploy heavier weapons along the border and not recognize the 2018 agreement.

Media in South Korea reported that since November 2023, the North Korean army has begun rebuilding command posts on the border. In addition, along the train tracks in the demilitarized zone, North Korean soldiers planted them with mines. This made the rails too dangerous to use.

Japan Earthquake Victims Increase to 94 People, 222 Others Still Missing

Victims of the 7.5 magnitude earthquake in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, increased to 94 people as of Thursday (4/1). Meanwhile, 222 other people are still declared missing.

Rescue teams are currently still searching for missing victims since the earthquake rocked Ishikawa Prefecture on the first day of the new year 2024.

Reporting from AFP, two elderly women were successfully pulled out from under the rubble on Thursday, one of them thanks to sniffer dogs. They survived four days after being trapped under the rubble of their residence in Wajima.

The port city of Wajima on the Noto Peninsula was one of the areas most affected by the Ishikawa earthquake.

"I was relaxing on New Year's Day when the earthquake happened. My relatives were all there and we were having fun," Hiroyuki Hamatani, 53, told AFP.

It is said that the rescue team will have difficulty carrying out the search due to weather obstacles such as rain, snow and cold temperatures which are expected to arrive in the next few days.

An earthquake rocked Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, on January 1.

The disaster killed at least 94 people and triggered tsunami waves more than one meter high, large fires and torn roads.

The impact of the earthquake was felt most heavily on the Noto Peninsula, with hundreds of houses engulfed in flames and others razed to the ground.

Currently, there are 1,315 Indonesian citizens (WNI) living in Ishikawa Prefecture. A total of 105 Indonesian citizens are in shelters at refugee camps.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo had begun distributing logistical assistance to Indonesian citizens affected by the earthquake who requested assistance.

Local authorities have also lifted the tsunami warning, but still warn of the possibility of aftershocks in the next week.

Gaza Solidarity, City in United Arab Emirates Bans New Year's Fireworks

The city of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates has imposed a ban on celebrations and fireworks displays on New Year's Eve. This ban is a form of solidarity with the people of the Gaza Strip who have been hit by war for months.

As reported by Al Arabiya, Thursday (28/12/2023), the ban was announced by the Sharjah Police in a statement on Wednesday (27/12) local time. Sharjah is the third most populous city in the United Arab Emirates, after Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Sharjah Police, in a statement, announced the imposition of a ban on celebrations and fireworks displays on New Year's Eve, saying the move was aimed at "expressing sincere solidarity and humanitarian cooperation with our brothers and sisters in the Gaza Strip".

Sharjah Police also confirmed that legal action will be taken against violators.

"Sharjah Police urges everyone, both institutions and individuals, to cooperate and comply, stressing that they will take all legal action against those who violate the instructions," Sharjah Police stressed in a statement.

"And reaffirms that humanitarian solidarity is an ingrained culture and ideology adhered to by the Emirate of Sharjah," added the statement.

War raged in the Gaza Strip after the Hamas group attacked Israeli territory by surprise on October 7. Tel Aviv officials said about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were killed in the attack.

More than 240 other people were taken hostage and detained in the Gaza Strip, with according to Israeli authorities, more than 100 hostages have been released and at least 129 other hostages are still being held by Hamas today.

Israel vowed to destroy Hamas, and responded with relentless bombing and ground operations against the Gaza Strip. The latest report from Gaza health authorities says at least 21,110 people, mostly women and children, were killed as a result of a series of Israeli attacks.

The origins of Santa Claus, who is synonymous with Christmas and its meaning

Entering the Christmas season, it cannot be denied that the figure of Santa Claus has become an icon that is inseparable from this celebration. But do we know why Christmas is so synonymous with this happy figure?

In the Christmas celebration, Santa Claus is a figure who is said to bring happiness by giving gifts to children. Santa is depicted wearing red and white clothes with a white beard.

So what are the origins and history of the creation of the figure of Santa? Let's find out the interesting story behind the presence of Santa Claus who brings joy this Christmas.

The Origins of Santa Claus

This frequently present Christmas icon actually still has a mystery about its origins. The following is the story of Santa Claus from several versions:

1. Ancient Christian Version

According to the ancient Christian version, Santa Claus is a bishop named Saint Nicholas. He was from Myra (now Demre region, Türkiye). Saint Nicholas was known for his kindness, especially his compassion for the sick and poor. Because of his goodness, Saint Nicholas is often used as a reference by many people as a Patron Saint, especially for people in need.

2. Common People's Version

The story about Santa Claus is most widely known from German folklore. In this version, Santa Claus is a figure who comes from Odin. Every year at the Yule celebration (midwinter festival), Odin and the Gods would go on a hunting party.

German children would usually place their shoes filled with carrots, hay, or sugar in the chimney which they offered to Odin's horse. In return, Odin will reward the children with candy.

Then, the story of Santa Claus experienced various developments, one of which was in the Netherlands. According to the Dutch version, Santa Claus is a kind-hearted figure, who has a black servant or slave with the name Zwarte Piet (Black Piet).

It is said that Black Piet would hit naughty children with his stick, put them in sacks and take them to Spain (in the past the Spaniards were known as sailors). However, in the end this story faced opposition because it was considered racist.

3. Fictional Version

Around 1822, there was a writer named Clement Moore who wrote that the figure of Santa Claus gave Christmas gifts to people through smoke that flowed into the fireplace area.

Some gifts are also sometimes placed by Santa Claus in stockings that are hung near the fireplace. This also links the existence of sock decorations at Christmas celebrations.

From these various versions, we have a picture of the figure of Santa Claus who often appears and enlivens the month of Christmas.

The meaning of Santa Claus in Christmas

The majority of children think that Santa Claus is a symbol of the Christmas celebration, because at Christmas events, almost every corner of activity, buildings, shopping centers, and even several churches display this special figure complete with his attributes.

Thousands of Palestinians Leave Central Gaza after Israeli Threats

Thousands of Palestinians were forced to flee their homes in the Nuseirat and Bureij refugee camps in the central Gaza Strip after the Israeli army warned them to immediately vacate the area. An Anadolu reporter said Palestinians were heading west to Deir al-Balah in central Gaza and to the Al-Mawasi area west of Khan Younis in the south. “Displaced Palestinians brought blankets, wooden sticks and nylon ropes to set up tents in the areas they went to, most of which were empty land that was uninhabitable,” said the Anadolu reporter. Friday morning (22/12/2023), the Israeli army ordered the residents of the two camps to leave their area for safety, causing panic and fear. According to Anadolu, Deir al-Balah was filled with residents fleeing the northern part of the Gaza Strip in the early days of the war. When the army asked Palestinians to move from one area to another under the pretext of safety, Israel continued to bombard entire areas of the Gaza Strip, leaving thousands of people dead. Since October 7, the Israeli army has waged a destructive war in Gaza, killing more than 20,057 Palestinians and injuring 53,320, most of whom are children and women.

The Israeli attacks caused massive damage to infrastructure and an “unprecedented humanitarian disaster,” according to Palestinian and international sources.

Police Arrest Hiroyuki Sanpei, Deny All Evidence Related to the Murder of Porn Film Star Rina Arano

Japanese police have succeeded in arresting the alleged murderer of porn film star Rina Arano.

However, the man known to be close to Rina Arano denied all the evidence presented by the police.

As is known, Rina Arano's body was found in the forest, tied to a tree in a rotting condition.

Rina Arano was found dead dumped on a forest slope in Hitachiota, Ibaraki Prefecture.

After being arrested by the police, Hiroyuki Sanpei denied the accusations.

The police certainly have to work harder, considering that Sanpei does not want to admit his actions.

He said he only took Rina to the villa voluntarily and took photos with Rina handcuffed.

He did this before taking Rina to the nearest shop.

Also on Hiroyuki Sanpei's cellphone, the police also found several photos of Rina.

Other evidence that supports Sanpei as the suspected perpetrator is that he was recorded on a car camera near the location where Arano's body was found.

The beginning

This incident began when the Japanese adult film model was reported to have been missing since June 8, 2022.

Ten days later, Rina Arano was found dumped on a forest slope in Hitachiota, Ibaraki Prefecture.

Other media then provided information from the police.

It is said that Rina was tied to a tree naked and had been dead for almost two weeks.

Rina's body was identified by her fans after the police released information regarding the description.

Apart from that, Rina's cellphone was found at the Sanpei villa on June 20.

US Ambassador to the UN: US Ready to Support Gaza Resolution

United States Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said a resolution regarding Gaza that the US could support had been drafted at the UN Security Council.

"We have that resolution now. We are ready to vote on that resolution," Thomas-Greenfield said.

"And this is a resolution that will provide humanitarian assistance to those in need," he said.

UN Secretary General António Guterres said Gaza faced a "humanitarian catastrophe" and the complete collapse of the humanitarian support system would lead to "a complete breakdown of public order and increased pressure for mass displacement to Egypt."

According to a report released Thursday by 23 UN agencies and a number of humanitarian agencies, all of Gaza's 2.2 million residents are in food crisis or worse, and 576,600 are at "catastrophic" level of hunger. With supplies cut off to Gaza, the UN World Food Program (WFP) said 90% of Gaza's population routinely had to go without food for an entire day.

President Yoon: A Strong, Nuclear-Based S. Korea-US Alliance Will Be Formed Soon

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol on Monday (18/12) said a “strong, nuclear-based alliance of South Korea and the US” would soon be formed.

Speaking at a cabinet meeting where he discussed North Korea's recent missile launches, Yoon said the second meeting of the Nuclear Consultative Group in Washington last week had moved South Korea and the US "closer towards establishing a unified deterrence system."

In a meeting between the two countries, they agreed to update their nuclear deterrence and emergency strategies and include nuclear operational scenarios in their joint military exercises next summer, officials in Seoul said.

The consultative body is responsible for sharing information on nuclear and strategic weapons operations plans and joint operations, although the US will retain operational control over its nuclear weapons. The formation of the group is part of US efforts to ease South Korean concerns about North Korean provocations while deterring Seoul. pursuing its own nuclear program.

Yoon also condemned North Korea's recent missile launch, calling it a "serious challenge" to the security of the Korean Peninsula and the world.

North Korea on Monday test-fired its first intercontinental ballistic missile in five months, possibly a more advanced and agile weapon, as it vowed a strong response to moves by the US and South Korea to step up their nuclear deterrence plans.

South Korea's military said the North Korean missile flew about 1,000 kilometers before landing in waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan.

It also said the missile was launched at a higher angle, apparently in an attempt to avoid neighboring countries.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un threatened “more offensive action” to remove what he called a US-led military threat after he oversaw the missile test, state media reported Tuesday.

After witnessing the launch of the Hwasong-18 intercontinental ballistic missile on Monday, Kim said the test showed how North Korea could respond if the US made a “wrong decision against it,” according to North Korea's official KCNA news agency.

Kim stressed the need to “never ignore all the enemy's reckless and irresponsible military threats… and to respond forcefully to those threats with more offensive actions.
